Tips for increasing your Persian vocabulary

Vocabulary is the cornerstone of your Persian skills. Without a large vocabulary, the understanding of Persian grammar cannot help you to speak Persian language. Memorizing vocabulary may not be a favorite activity, but there are plenty of innovative ways to make it more entertaining and enjoyable. A good idea is to use a wide variety of methods and resources. Use flash cards, CDs, Videos, etc. to keep yourself motivated. To learn Persian vocabulary, a little each day is the key to success. When you are learning Persian language, you have to work on it every day. In this way, each new word that you learn becomes yours.  On the average, you need to use a word 10 to 20 times to move it from your short-term memory into your long term memory.  Learning words from the context is the best way to make sure that you understand the real definition of them. Most vocabulary words are learned from reading. The more words you’re exposed to, the better vocabulary you will have.

Always have access to a comprehensive Persian – English dictionary so that you can look up words you don’t know whenever you encounter them. After encountering and looking up a word several times, you should eventually be able to remember its definition.

Read all kinds of books. When you come across a word you don’t know, read the sentences around the word and try to figure out what it means from the context. Check your guess with a dictionary. At first, you shouldn’t start reading specialized textbooks with lots of new words on every page. Start with simple books including children books. If you set aside time each day to sit down with your books, you can gradually deepen your knowledge of Persian.

Find Friend

Find a friend who speaks Persian.

 You need to practice using your new words and the best thing to do is talking to a native Persian. You can find Persian friends around the world. With a web connection, your conversation partner does not need to live near you. You can email, chat, and even phone each other using your computers.

Watch

Listen to the radio, watch television, or find a podcast that you like in Persian, and practice understanding the language when spoken, too.

You can download audio books and speech radio. This is an excellent way to learn new Persian words, because you learn not only the new word, but also how to correctly pronounce it.

Practice, practice, practice.

Learning new words won’t help very much if you promptly forget them. It usually takes at least 10 repetitions to really make a word part of your vocabulary. It’s a good idea to write the new words, their definitions and one or two sentences you make up using the words.  You can later review the words to make sure you can use them in your conversations effectively.
