Simple Present of “to be”


هَستَم

/hastam/ I am

هَستی

/hasti/ You are(singular)

هَست – اَست

/hast/ – /ast/ He / She is

هَستیم

/hastim/ We are

هَستید

/hastid/ You are

هَستَند

/hastand/ They are

Examples:

English Pronunciation Persian
I am a teacher.  /man ostâd hastam/

.مَن اُستاد هَستم

You are (singular) a atudent /to dâneshju hasti/

.تو دانشجو هَستی

S/he is a teacher. /u ostâd hast/

.او اُستاد هَست

We are students. /mâ dâneshju hastim/

.ما دانِشجو هَستیم

You are students. /shomâ dâneshju hastid/

.شُما دانِشجو هَستید

They are teachers. /ânhâ ostâd hastand/

.آنها اُستاد هَستَند


Removing the Pronouns:

The verbal endings indicate the subject. Therefore, personal pronouns may be removed in sentences.

مَن اُستاد هَستم.

=

اُستاد هَستم.

/man ostâd hastam/ / ostâd hastam/

تو دانِشجو هَستی.

=

دانِشجو هَستی.

/to dâneshju hasti/ / dâneshju hasti/

او اُستاد هَست.

=

استاد هَست.
