Welcome to Day 3, Part 2 of our “Learning Farsi in 100 Days” training course. In this part, we will complete our study of the Farsi alphabet by learning the remaining letters. Understanding these letters will further enhance your ability to read and write in Farsi. Today, we will focus on the letters: “ض“, “ث“, and “ظ“.

Mastering the Letter “ض“: Day 3 of the Learn Farsi in 100 Days Course, Part 2

ض-ضـ” called “zâd”, is the eighteenth letter of the Persian alphabet. It has short and full forms. “ض” sounds /ze/ like “z” in “zipper”.The letter ”ض” (Zad) is pronounced similar to the “d” sound but with a slightly heavier tone. This letter is often used in words of Arabic origin.

Examples:

Initial Letter:                                   ضَرَر                      /zarar/                      harm
Medial Letter:                                 مضطرب              /moztareb/               anxious
Final Joined Letter:                        مَریض                  /mariz/                      sick

The Letter “ث“ (Se)

ث – ثـ” /se/ is the fifth letter of the Persian alphabet. It has short and full forms. “ث” sounds /se/ like “s” in “Second”. The letter “ث“ (Se) is pronounced like the English “th” in “think.” This is a soft sound and it is also found in Arabic words.

Examples:

Initial Letter:                                            ثروت                    /servat/                     wealth
Medial and Final Disjoined Letter:         اَثاث                     /asâs/                        furnishings

ظ ” called “zâ” is the twentieth letter of the Persian alphabet. It only has one form and joins to the preceding and following letters in Persian words. “ ظ” sounds /ze/ like “z” in “zipper”.The letter “ظ“ (Za) is similar to the English “th” in “this,” but with a deeper, more resonant sound. Like the other two letters, it is also found in words of Arabic origin.

Examples:

Initial Letter:                                   ظُهر                     /zohr/                       noon
Medial Letter:                                 مظنون                /moz’noon/               suspect
