Focus on آ (Alef) – ا (Alef) and بـ – ب (Be)
“آ – ا ”, called “alef”, is the first letter of the Farsi alphabet. Letter “alef” is vowel and has two forms. “آ ” always pronouns /â/ like “a” in “father”. It is an initial letter which never joins the following and preceding letters. Final “alef” is written as “ا ”. It has four sounds, /â/ like “a” in “father”, /a/ like “a” in “cat”, /e/ like “e” in “men”, and /o/ like “o” in “gorgeous”. Final “alef” only joins to the preceding letters.
“بـ – ب ” /be/ is the second letter of the Persian alphabet. It sounds /be/ like “b” in “black”. “ب – بـ ” has two forms.”بـ “ is the short form. In general, letters in short forms take the initial or medial positions in a Persian word. “ب ” is the full form. Letters in full form come only at the end of the words. آب /âb/: water بابا /bâbâ/: dad
