Grammar note: language names
- Most language names are the country name plus ـی (-i): آلمان (âlmân, Germany) gives آلمانی (âlmâni). The same word is the adjective and the nationality, so آلمانی means "German" in every sense.
- To be precise, put زبان (zabân, "language") in front with ezâfe: زبان آلمانی (zabân-e âlmâni), "the German language".
- "To speak a language" is صحبت کردن به (sohbat kardan be) or, more often, بلد بودن (balad budan), "to know": فارسی بلدم (fârsi baladam), "I know Persian".
- In Iran ترکی (torki) on its own usually means Azerbaijani Turkish. The language of Turkey is often called ترکی استانبولی (torki-ye estânbuli).
Culture note
Persian, Dari and Tajik are varieties of the same language. Iranian Persian and Dari use the Persian alphabet, while Tajik is written in the Cyrillic alphabet.
