Which letters are covered on Day 1 of Part 4 in the 100-Day Persian Learning Course?
- “ی – یـ” /ye/ is the thirty second letter of the Persian alphabet. It has three sounds, /ye/ like “y” in “yes”, /e/ like “e” in “men”, and /i/ like “ee” in “meet”.
“ی” has three forms. “یـ” is the short form and “ی” is the full format. “ی” sometimes is written as “ای” and sounds /i/ like “i” in “trip”.
سَبزی /sabzi/: vegetable بیمار /bimâr/: sick - “و” called “vâv”, is the thirtieth letter of the Persian alphabet. It only has one form. “و” has three sounds. It sounds /v/ like “v” in “Very”, sounds /o/ like “O” in “Orange”, sounds /u/ like “oo” in “Good”. “و” only joins to the preceding letters in Persian words.
دور /dur/: distant دوست /dust/: friend - “پـ – پ” /pe/ is the third letter of the Persian alphabet. It sounds /pe/ like “p” in “pen”. “پ” has two forms. “پـ” is the short form; therefore, it takes the initial or medial positions in a Persian word. “پ” is the full form. Therefore, it comes only at the end of the words.
