This lesson focuses on two essential Farsi letters: “ه“ (he), and “خ“ (khe). Understanding these letters and their different forms is crucial for your progress in learning Farsi. The Farsi Letter “ه“ (He)
“هـ – ـه – ه” called “he”, is the thirty first letter of the Persian alphabet. It sounds /he/ like “h” in “hat”. It also sounds /e/ like “e” in “men”. The Farsi letter “ه“ (he) is a commonly used letter in the Farsi language. “ه” is written in four forms:
Isolated form: ه
Initial form: هـ
Medial form: ـه
Final form: ه
How to Write and Pronounce “ه“
Isolated and Final Form (ه): When standing alone or at the end of a word, “ه“ is written as a single character.
Initial Form (هـ): At the beginning of a word,“هـ“ connects to the next letter on its left.
Medial Form (ـه): In the middle of a word, “ـه“ connects to both the preceding and the following letters.
Pronunciation Tip: The letter “ه“ is pronounced like the English “h” as in “hello.”
Examples:
Initial Letter: ها /hâ/ plural suffix
Medial Letter: پَهن /pahn/ wide
Final Joined Letter: تَپِه /tapeh/ hill
Final Disjoined Letter: گُناه /gonâh/ sin
The Letter ‘Khe’ in Learn Farsi in 100 Days: Day 2, Part 1
“خـ – خ” /khe/ is the ninth letter of the Persian alphabet. It has short and full forms. “خ” sounds /khe/ like “ch” in “loch”, a Scottish word. The Farsi letter “خ“ (khe) is another fundamental letter in Farsi. Like “ه“, it also changes its form based on its position in a word:
Initial form: خـ
Medial form: ـخـ
Final form: ـخ
How to Write and Pronounce “ خ “
Isolated and Final Form (خ): When “خ“ appears at the end of a word, it connects to the preceding letter.
Initial Form (خـ): At the start of a word, “خـ“ connects to the next letter.
Medial Form (ـخـ): In the middle of a word, “ـخـ“ connects to both the preceding and the following letters.
Pronunciation Tip: The letter “خ“ is pronounced with a guttural “kh” sound, similar to the “ch” in the German word “Bach.”
Examples:
Initial Letter: خانِه /khâne/ house
Medial Letter: تَخت /takht/ bed
Final Joined Letter: یخ /yakh/ ice
