Beginner review: numbers and telling time

This page is a review lesson for the "Persian For Beginners: A Complete Course" series. It covers the numbers you need every day, the Persian digits you will see on signs and prices, and how to ask and tell the time.

Numbers 0 to 20

Persian Pronunciation English
۰ صفر /sefr/ 0
۱ یک /yek/ 1
۲ دو /do/ 2
۳ سه /se/ 3
۴ چهار /chahâr (spoken châr)/ 4
۵ پنج /panj/ 5
۶ شش /shesh/ 6
۷ هفت /haft/ 7
۸ هشت /hasht/ 8
۹ نه /noh/ 9
۱۰ ده /dah/ 10
۱۱ یازده /yâzdah/ 11
۱۲ دوازده /davâzdah/ 12
۱۳ سیزده /sizdah/ 13
۱۴ چهارده /chahârdah/ 14
۱۵ پانزده /pânzdah (spoken punzdah)/ 15
۱۶ شانزده /shânzdah (spoken shunzdah)/ 16
۱۷ هفده /hefdah/ 17
۱۸ هجده /hejdah/ 18
۱۹ نوزده /nuzdah/ 19
۲۰ بیست /bist/ 20

Tens and compound numbers

Persian Pronunciation English
۳۰ سی /si/ 30
۴۰ چهل /chehel/ 40
۵۰ پنجاه /panjâh/ 50
۶۰ شصت /shast/ 60
۷۰ هفتاد /haftâd/ 70
۸۰ هشتاد /hashtâd/ 80
۹۰ نود /navad/ 90
۱۰۰ صد /sad/ 100
۲۵ بیست و پنج /bist o panj/ 25
۴۸ چهل و هشت /chehel o hasht/ 48

Compound numbers join the parts with و, pronounced o: بیست و پنج (bist o panj), "twenty-five". Persian digits are written from left to right, just like English digits, even though the text runs right to left: ۲۵ is 25.

Numbers in daily life

Persian digits appear on prices, phone numbers, license plates and clocks, so it is worth learning their shapes early. Look closely at ۴, ۵ and ۶ (4, 5 and 6), which do not resemble their English equivalents, and do not confuse ۰ (0), a small dot, with ۵ (5), a small circle or heart shape. Many people also write ۴, ۵ and ۶ in slightly different handwritten shapes, so read the number in context.

Two other habits help in shops. First, the counting word تا (tâ) often comes between a number and a noun in speech: سه تا کتاب (se tâ ketâb), "three books". Second, the noun after a number stays singular: "three book", never "three books" with a plural ending. Prices in conversation are usually given in tomans, تومان (tomân), even though the official currency is the rial; one toman equals ten rials.

To ask how many, use چند (chand) or چند تا (chand tâ) followed by a singular noun: چند تا کتاب داری؟ (chand tâ ketâb dâri?), "How many books do you have?" The same word چند appears in the time question ساعت چنده؟, literally "the hour is how much?"

Telling the time

Persian Pronunciation English
ساعت چنده؟ /sâ'at chande?/ What time is it? (spoken)
ساعت چند است؟ /sâ'at chand ast?/ What time is it? (written)
ساعت سه است. /sâ'at se ast./ It's three o'clock.
سه و ربع /se o rob'/ quarter past three
سه و نیم /se o nim/ half past three
یه ربع به چهار /ye rob' be chahâr/ quarter to four
پنج و ده دقیقه /panj o dah daghighe/ ten past five
ده دقیقه به شش /dah daghighe be shesh/ ten to six

ربع (rob') means "quarter" and نیم (nim) means "half". Minutes after the hour are added with و; minutes before the hour use به (be), "to". To show the part of the day, add صبح (sobh), "morning", بعدازظهر (ba'd az zohr), "afternoon", or شب (shab), "night": ساعت هشت شب, "eight in the evening".

Dialogue

Speaker Persian Pronunciation English
Amir ببخشید، ساعت چنده؟ /bebakhshid, sâ'at chande?/ Excuse me, what time is it?
Mina ساعت ده و نیمه. /sâ'at dah o nime./ It's half past ten.
Amir کلاس ساعت چند شروع میشه؟ /kelâs sâ'at chand shoru' mishe?/ What time does the class start?
Mina ساعت یازده. نیم ساعت وقت داریم. /sâ'at yâzdah. nim sâ'at vaght dârim./ At eleven. We have half an hour.
