Usage note: rials and tomans

  • The official currency of Iran is the ریال (riyâl), and banknotes and bank statements show rials. In everyday speech people count in تومان (tomân), spoken تومن (toman). One toman is ten rials, so always check which unit a price is in.
  • In casual speech the word هزار (hezâr, "thousand") is often left out of prices, so you need the context to know the real amount. If in doubt, ask به تومن؟ (be toman?), "in tomans?".
  • ـی turns a noun into an adverb or adjective of payment: قسطی (ghesti), "in installments"; نقدی (naghdi), "in cash".

Culture note

A shopkeeper or taxi driver may answer "How much?" with قابل نداره (ghâbel nadâre), "it's not worth anything". This is تعارف (ta'ârof), ritual politeness: it is not a real offer, and you are expected to insist and pay.
