If you are reading this article, it is probably safe to assume you are not fully satisfied with your Persian and do not consider yourself fluent. It is also likely that you have studied Persian in university or perhaps in online classes or private classes, as well as through self-study and your own lived experiences. So why are you not yet fluent? What have been your «barriers to study» in the past? What has caused you to lose your motivation? What needs to change? These are all important questions to ask if you genuinely want to improve your Persian. Please take responsibility for your own progress, set tangible and realistic targets, and have confidence in your ability to succeed.
Best Farsi Learning Resource!
1. First we understand, then we speak
Just as young kids, we develop a good understanding of our parents’ language before we are actually able to speak or produce grammatical sentences ourselves. This is the same for adult learners of Persian as a foreign language; in fact, your understanding will always be ahead of your own practical ability to speak and use the language. As you know, understanding is the basis for the spoken fluency that follows.
2. Be disciplined, but flexible
Don’t feel frustrated if you don’t feel like learning one day, or if you’re busy and don’t have the time or energy. This happens.
Please try planning your week ahead so that you make sure you factor in your study time.
If you miss a session, don’t need to beat yourself up. You can keep yourself motivated by reminding yourself that you can always fit it in another day.

3. It is normal to make mistakes, but learn from them
One of the best ways to become fluent in a foreign language is through trial and error. Therefore, making mistakes is both normal and necessary. Generally, everyone will be expecting you to make mistakes so there is no need to be overly worried about this. The important point is that you learn from these mistakes in order to improve next time. If you lack confidence when speaking Persian, think of it this way: Most Iranian don’t speak any foreign languages fluently. You are already ahead of them and you made communication with Persian speakers easier! Thank you.
4. Celebrate success
Definitely, rewards are great motivators! Don’t forget to reward yourself when you achieve your goals.
If you have a really productive day of learning, why not take a break the next day as a reward? Or you can set yourself a goal for the day. If you achieve that goal, go and treat yourself to that slice of cake you’ve been craving!
5. Be your own best critic
Always be 100% honest with yourself about your progress in Persian. It is easy to blame your past classroom experiences or teachers, busy working life, and family commitments for your current lack of fluency. However, making excuses will not help you to improve your Persian. You have to take control of and be responsible for your own progress. No one can learn Persian for you. Please be your own best critic, but be constructive with your criticism.
6. Develop your own motivations
Think about something you love doing, and then you should mix it up with something more challenging.
Let’s say you’d like to do your next Persian lesson today, but you don’t feel like it because it’s beautiful and sunny outside.
Well, you could go to a park, grab yourself a coffee and some biscuits and study Persian whilst lying on the grass sunbathing!
Sounds like a good plan?
Be consistent, it’s important and essential.
Usually, it takes around a month to form a habit, so don’t give up!
Persian learning will eventually become part of your daily life if you organize yourself properly. The fact is: you don’t need a lot of time. regularity is key.
7. Mix it up
Learning Persian should be as fun as possible, and we think that changing the resources you use to learn will make it more interesting.
You could:
Listen to podcasts
Read a Persian book or blogs
Watch a movie or listen to music in Persian
Have a conversation with a native Persian speaker
Write down what you did yesterday (that way you can also write a personal diary in the Persian language)
The list is endless!
8. Remember why you started
Please try to bring that first burst of motivation back to life! There are several benefits of learning Persian.
Did you start learning Persian to go traveling? Or was it so you could speak with native speakers?
Whatever it was, remembering why you started learning this language, will give you a little boost of energy and remind you why it’s all worth it!
9. Divide and rule
Please set yourself some challenging, yet achievable goals.
Actually, by doing this, you’ll feel that you’re progressing, which will, in turn, motivate you to continue learning Persian. So it’s a win-win situation!
Instead of rushing to complete a whole lesson on Persian pronunciation when you only have 5 minutes, why not do the first part today and the second part tomorrow?
