Maxims and Remarks پندها و اندرزها
Maxims and Remarks (پندها و اندرزها) is from Chapter II, On Beneficence (در احسان) of Saadi’s Bustan (بوستان, “The Orchard”), written in 1257. The Persian verses are given with a rhymed English translation, couplet by couplet.
Bustan Saadi بوستان سعدی
| To her daughter, how well spoke a village-chiefs wife “Prepare for distress when provisions are rife! At all times, a pitcher and cup brimful show! For the stream in the village will not always flow “. | به دختر چه خوش گفت بانوی ده که روز نوا برگ سختی بنه همه وقت بردار مشک و سبوی که پیوسته در ده روان نیست جوی |
| With the world, you can doubtless Futurity gain, And the claws of the Devil, with gold you can sprain Do not visit your Love, if you own not a thing ! And if you have silver, oh come thou, and bring ! | به دنیا توان آخرت یافتن به زر پنجه شیر بر تافتن اگر تنگدستی مرو پیش یار وگر سیم داری بیا و بیار |
| اگر روی بر خاک پایش نهی جوابت نگوید به دست تهی خداوند زر برکند چشم دیو به دام آورد صخر جنی به ریو تهی دست در خوبرویان مپیچ که بی هیچ مردم نیرزند هیچ | |
| From a hand that is empty, no hope will arise ; With gold, you can gouge out the White Devil’s eyes. | به دست تهی بر نیاد امید به زر برکنی چشم دیو سپید |
| Do not turn empty handed the door of the Fair ! For a man without money is valueless there ! | به یک بار بر دوستان زر مپاش وز آسیب دشمن به اندیشه باش |
| If you place on your palm all the wealth you possess, Your palm will be bare, in the time of distress. | اگر هرچه یابی به کف برنهی کفت وقت حاجت بماند تهی |
| By your efforts, weak beggars will never get strong, And I fear, you yourself will get weak before long. | گدایان به سعی تو هرگز قوی نگردند، ترسم تو لاغر شوی |
