5 Steps to Persian Fluency

Good language learners notice and realize what is happening in a language. Actually, they notice the structure, sounds, and vocabulary of the language. Good language learners notice as they listen and read. They also notice when they use the language. The question is: how can we train ourselves in the ability to notice in order to become good language learners?

1. Have Fun With It

Using Persian in any way is a creative act. You can practice Persian by writing and recording songs. Think of some fun ways to practice Persian: make a radio play with a friend, draw a comic strip, keep a diary, or simply talk to whomever you can.

2. Fast and slow

Please listen to the content at normal speed, and then listen again at a slowed-down pace. Either the content has been recorded twice, once at normal speed, and once slowly, or you can also use some audio management apps to slow songs and voices down. Usually, you will notice much more when you listen the second time to the slower version.

3. Keep It Relevant

If you make conversation a goal from the beginning, you’re less likely to get lost in Persian textbooks. Speaking to people is one of the best ways to learn Persian because it keeps the learning process relevant to you.

“You’re learning Persian to be able to use it. You’re not going to speak this language only to yourself. The creative side is really being able to put Persian into a more useful, general, everyday setting — be that through writing songs, generally wanting to speak to people, or using it when you travel to Iran.”

4. Use the language

Using the language is a great and helpful way to notice. When you write or speak Persian, even if you are not corrected, you tend to notice where your gaps and problems are. Generally, having your errors pointed out can also help you notice. In fact, this is helpful as long as we don’t expect the corrections to actually correct us. They will only help us notice.

5. Find A Language Partner

Please find some kind of partner that will push both of you to try just a little bit harder.

We think it’s a really great way of actually going about it. You have someone with whom you can speak, and that’s the idea behind learning Persian.

Important Tips:

1. Identify your learning style

You know better than anyone how you learn the language best. For example, if you know it’s easier for you to understand a topic or lesson through logical reasoning, you’d hone in on grammar rules & structures to study Persian. Identify your learning style and take advantage of your particular skills to accelerate your Persian learning.

2. Don’t underestimate your knowledge

For many of us, when we begin to study Persian we feel like we don’t know much at all, but the reality is that people rarely start from scratch. You probably already know some Persian from your exposure to media and music. We recommend that you start by finding out your Persian level by taking free online tests.

3. Choose the best time of day

Consistency is essential for progress in learning Persian, so we recommend that you choose a time of day when you know that you will not be interrupted. Also, take into account your habits: for example, learners who tend to get up early are more likely to study in the morning.

4. Don’t look for perfection

Remember that you don’t have to be perfect. It’s not about speaking like a native Persian, it’s about being able to communicate clearly and correctly. Please don’t let insecurities or fears limit your development and learning.

5. Set goals

In fact, it is very difficult to measure your progress if you do not have clear goals. As you know, you should set the goal you want to achieve (for example: being able to have a comfortable video call conversation in six months) and then set smaller goals to gradually reach that goal (for example: learning a new word a day).
