On the Power of True and Metaphorical Love (تقریر عشق مجازی و قوت آن) is from Chapter III, On Love (در عشق و مستی و شور) of Saadi’s Bustan (بوستان, “The Orchard”), written in 1257. The Persian verses are given with a rhymed English translation, couplet by couplet.
Bustan Saadi بوستان سعدی
| Your love of one, made out of water and clay Like yourself, steals all patience and calmness away. While awake, you’re bewitched with her cheek and her mole; While dreaming, the thought of her fetters your soul. | تو را عشق همچون خودی ز آب و گل رباید همی صبر و آرام دل به بیداریش فتنه برخد و خال به خواب اندرش پای بند خیال |
| In devotion, your head on her feet you’ve so placed, That when with her, you look on the world as effaced. When the longing for gold in your sweetheart is slight, Gold and dust are exactly the same in your sight | به صدقش چنان سرنهی بر قدم که بینی جهان با وجودش عدم چو در چشم شاهد نیاید زرت زر و خاک یکسان نماید برت |
| Your soul with another one cannot be bound, For, with her, not a place for another is found. You say that her dwelling exists in your eyes ; If your eyelids you close, in your heart, then, it lies. | دگر با کست بر نیاید نفس که با او نماند دگر جای کس تو گویی به چشم اندرش منزل است وگر دیده برهم نهی در دل است |
| You’ve no care lest dishonour should reach you, at length ; To be patient, one moment, you have not the strength. | نه اندیشه از کس که رسوا شوی نه قوت که یک دم شکیبا شوی |
| If she asks for your life, on your palm, you it lay ; If she places a sword on your head, you say, “Slay !” | گرت جان بخواهد به لب بر نهی وگر تیغ بر سر نهد سر نهی |
