Story of the Wise Man and the Ameer's Gift (حکایت مرد روشن ضمیر و هدیه امیر) is from Chapter VI, On Contentment (در قناعت) of Saadi’s Bustan (بوستان, “The Orchard”), written in 1257. The Persian verses are given with a rhymed English translation, couplet by couplet.

| The Cathay Ameer sent a rich, silken dress To a sage, who a luminous mind did possess. | یکی را ز مردان روشن ضمیر امیر ختن داد طاقی حریر |
| He donn’d it and kissing the ground and his hands, Said, “A thousand Well dones ‘on the king of all lands! | ز شادی چو گلبرگ خندان شکفت نپوشید و دستش ببوسید و گفت: |
| How fine is this dress, from the Tartar Ameer! Yet my own ragged garment to me is more dear! “ | چه خوب است تشریف میر ختن وز او خوب تر خرقه خویشتن |
| If you’re free; on the ground you should slumber, and then, Do not kiss for a carpet the ground before men! | گر آزادهای بر زمین خسب و بس مکن بهر قالی زمین بوس کس |
| He kissed the hands of the messenger who brought the present. |
