Story on oppression حکایت در مورد ستم
Story on Oppression (حکایت در مورد ستم) is from Chapter I, On Justice, Wisdom and Government (در عدل و تدبیر و رای) of Saadi’s Bustan (بوستان, “The Orchard”), written in 1257. The Persian verses are given with a rhymed English translation, couplet by couplet.
Bustan Saadi بوستان سعدی
| One was cutting the branches and trunk of a tree The lord of the garden his doings did see. He said, If the work of this person is vile, Himself, and not me, he is hurting, the while.” | یکی بر سر شاخ، بن می‌برید خداوند بستان نگه کرد و دید بگفتا گر این مرد بد می‌کند نه با من که با نفس خود می‌کند |
| Advice is salvation, if taken aright Overthrow not the weak with the shoulder of might ! For, tomorrow, to God as a king will be borne The beggar, that now, you’d not value one corn. | نصیحت بجای است اگر بشنوی ضعیفان میفگن به کتف قوی که فردا به داور برد خسروی گدایی که پیشت نیرزد جوی |
| Since you wish that you may on the morrow be great, Do not sink your own foe to a humble estate ! For when this dominion shall pass from your grasp, That beggar your skirt, out of malice, will clasp. | چو خواهی که فردا بوی مهتری مکن دشمن خویشتن، کهتری که چون بگذرد بر تو این سلطنت بگیرد به قهر آن گدا دامنت |
| At oppressing the feeble, take care not to aim For, should they prevail, you’ll be covered with shame. In the view of the noble of mind, it is base At the hand of the fallen to suffer disgrace. | مکن، پنجه از ناتوانان بدار که گر بفگنندت شوی شرمسار که زشت است در چشم آزادگان بیفتادن از دست افتادگان |
| Enlightened and fortunate men of renown, Have obtained by their wisdom the throne and the crown. | بزرگان روشندل نیکبخت به فرزانگی تاج بردند و تخت |
| In the wake of the true, do not crookedly steer ! And if Truth you desire, unto Sadi give ear ! | به دنباله راستان گژ مرو وگر راست خواهی ز سعدی شنو |
