About Persian names

Iranian names come from several layers of history. The oldest go back to the Achaemenid kings (Kurosh, Dâriush, Khashâyâr) and to Zoroastrian ideas (Bahman, Sorush, Anâhitâ). Many come from Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, the national epic, and from classical poetry, such as Shirin and Farhâd. Others are everyday Persian words for nature and beauty: Bahâr (spring), Setâre (star), Lâle (tulip), Daryâ (sea). Since the arrival of Islam, Arabic names such as Ali, Mohammad, Zahrâ and Maryam have also been very common.

Transliterations follow our usual convention: â is the long a in “father”, kh is the sound in Scottish “loch” and gh is a throaty g. Want to see how an English name looks in Persian script? Use the Write your name in Persian tool.

FAQ

Which Persian names come from the Shahnameh?

Many classic Iranian names come from Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh (Book of Kings), including Rostam, Sohrab, Siavash, Esfandiyar, Kaveh, Fereydun, Iraj, Bizhan and Jamshid for boys, and Tahmineh, Rudabeh, Manizheh, Farangis and Gordafarid for girls. Use the origin filter to see them all.

Are all Iranian names Persian in origin?

No. Many common Iranian names, such as Ali, Mohammad, Hossein, Maryam, Zahra and Leila, come from Arabic, often through Islam, and a few, such as Sara and Daniel, are biblical. Each name in this list shows its origin.

Which Persian names are unisex?

A few names are used for both boys and girls, for example Arya (آریا), Azar (آذر), Nasim (نسیم), Baran (باران) and Shamim (شمیم). Most Persian names are clearly used for one gender.

Why are Persian names spelled differently in English?

There is no single official way to write Persian in Latin letters, so the same name can appear as Kourosh, Koorosh or Kurosh. This list gives a consistent transliteration (â for the long a) plus the common English spellings.

What are the Persian forms of Darius and Cyrus?

Darius is داریوش (Dâriush) and Cyrus is کوروش (Kurosh) in Persian. Both were Achaemenid kings, and both names are still popular in Iran today.
