How your name is written in Persian

Persian writes foreign names the way they sound. Long vowels are written with ا (â), ی (i/ey) and و (u/o), while short vowels are often left out. A name that starts with a vowel begins with ا or آ. Sounds that do not exist in Persian are replaced by the closest Persian sound: “th” usually becomes ت and “w” becomes و.

FAQ

How are English names written in Persian?

Names are written by sound, not letter by letter. Persian has no silent letters for this, so "Sarah" and "Sara" are both سارا, and "Steven" and "Stephen" are both استیون. Short vowels are often left out, which is why a Persian spelling can look shorter than the English one.

Can I use the result for a tattoo or engraving?

Use it as a starting point only. Spellings of foreign names can vary, and a small mistake is permanent on skin or metal. Ask a native Persian speaker to check the spelling, the letter shapes and the direction before you go ahead.

Why does my name have two Persian spellings?

Some names are pronounced in more than one way, or are written differently by different people. For example, Daniel can be دنیل or دانیل, and Jean is ژان in French but جین in English. Choose the one that matches how you say your name.

Does Persian have capital letters?

No. Persian has no capital letters. Instead, most letters change shape slightly depending on whether they are at the start, middle or end of a word.

Which way do I read my name in Persian?

Persian is read from right to left, so the first letter of your name is on the right. Most letters join to the next letter, which is why the name looks like one connected shape.
