One grammar reference that takes you from your first sentence to the passive voice

Many learners outgrow a beginner grammar within a few months and then need a second book. Easy Persian Grammar covers both stages in one volume: units 1 to 56 teach the basics, from the vowels and the alphabet to the present subjunctive and numbers up to 1,000, and units 57 to 100 move on to the perfect tenses, conditionals, passive sentences, quotation and causative verbs.

Units are two or three pages: a short rule, numbered examples and an exercise. In unit 34, for example, کتاب (ketâb, book) becomes کتابم (ketâbam, my book) and کتابشان (ketâbeshân, their book), and the exercise asks you to turn کتاب من into the joined form. Answers to every exercise start on page 229.

Answer key

Answers to all exercises from page 229, so you can study without a teacher.

From unit 34: joined possessive pronouns

Instead of a separate word for “my” or “their”, Persian can add a short ending to the noun. The book shows all six endings on کتاب (ketâb, book):

Persian Pronunciation English
کتابم ketâbam my book
کتابت ketâbat your book (singular)
کتابش ketâbash his or her book
کتابمان ketâbemân our book
کتابتان ketâbetân your book (plural)
کتابشان ketâbeshân their book

The free ezâfe guide explains the separate form, کتاب من (ketâb-e man), that these endings replace.

Common questions

What level is it?

Beginner to intermediate. Units 1 to 56 cover the basics; units 57 to 100 cover the perfect tenses, the subjunctive, conditionals, the passive and word building.

Do I need to know the alphabet first?

No. Units 2 and 3 cover the vowels and the 32 letters. Later units do expect you to read Persian script, since many examples there have no transliteration.
