The writer who made history feel like an adventure, from his father’s island to Paris

Little Alex grows up with his mother in Villers-Cotterêts, short of money but full of hope, and one rainy afternoon finds an old book of knights and treasure hunts in the attic. The book also goes back a generation: in 1775 his grandfather Antoine leaves Saint-Domingue for France, sells Marie-Cessette and her daughters, and takes his son Thomas-Alexandre, Alex’s father, with him.

There are also two 47-page books, The Story of Alexandre Dumas and a second edition with the same title, that cover his life quickly. This 102-page edition adds whole chapters on his first play reaching the stage, the revolution of 1830 and King Louis-Philippe, serial novels such as Le Capitaine Paul, and how he and Maquet built Georges and The Count of Monte Cristo.

What the book covers

Chapter titles include “A Boy with Big Dreams” and “A Journey to Paris”, each opening with a short motto.

Roots

Thomas-Alexandre’s childhood on Saint-Domingue, his mother Marie-Cessette, and the voyage to France that changed his life.

Paris and the stage

Lonely evenings outside grand theaters, a director who says “This is… good”, and a nervous opening night.

A writer at work

The 1830 revolution, stories printed one chapter at a time, a team of helpers led by Auguste Maquet, and the musketeers Athos, Porthos, Aramis and d’Artagnan.

What children learn

That big dreams take work and friends, and that history can be the seed of a great story.

Lines from the book

From the first chapter:

Persian English
اما زندگی برای الکس و مادرش همیشه راحت نبود. But life wasn’t always easy for Alex and his mother.
یک بعدازظهر بارانی، الکس یک کتاب قدیمی را در اتاق زیر شیروانی پیدا کرد. One rainy afternoon, Alex found an old book in the attic.

اتاق زیر شیروانی (otâgh-e zir-e shirvâni) is the Persian for attic: literally “the room under the roof”.

How to read it with your child

  1. Read the attic chapter, then ask your child what kind of book they would hope to find.
  2. Read each English page, then the Persian aloud, and look for the names الکس and پاریس.
  3. When you reach the musketeers, act out their motto together, in English and in Persian.
  4. Use the free Farsi alphabet lessons to help your child sound out French names written in Persian letters.
