The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid retells Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale in English and Persian on illustrated pages. The youngest mermaid princess longs to see the world above the waves, rescues a prince from a shipwreck, and trades her voice to the sea witch for legs. The book keeps Andersen’s own bittersweet ending with the daughters of the air rather than the film version. 59-page PDF.

Andersen’s original mermaid story, told gently in English and Persian

Many children know the movie; fewer know Hans Christian Andersen’s story. The Little Mermaid follows the original: a grandmother’s tales of flowers, forests and singing birds, a wait until the fifteenth birthday, and a first look at a ship full of music, lights and fireworks. When a storm breaks the ship apart, the little mermaid carries the prince to safety and then quietly returns to the spot where she left him, again and again.

The sea witch’s warning that her new legs will hurt as if swords were cutting her is kept, and so is the sadness of the prince marrying someone else. The ending is gentle: the little mermaid joins the daughters of the air and spreads kindness in the world. The story is told in short passages, in English and in Persian, set beside full-color pictures.

Inside the story

The story

A sea princess who dreams of the human world, saves a prince and pays a high price to follow him.

Under the sea

A crystal ballroom with glowing shells, fish in purple, silver and gold, and mermaids who dance and sing.

What children learn

Love that gives without asking for anything back, and that a sad story can still end in hope.

Good for

Children who are ready for a fairy tale that is not all happy endings.

A sample from the book

From the opening pages, in the book’s Persian:

Persian English
او هر شب از پنجره، ماه و ستاره‌ها را تماشا می‌کرد و منتظر بود تا نوبت او برای دیدن جهان بالای آب برسد. Every night she watched the moon and stars from her window and waited for her turn to see the world above the water.
او می‌دانست که روزی می‌تواند بالا برود و جنگل‌ها، شهرها و کشتی‌هایی را که از آن‌جا می‌گذرند، ببیند. She knew that one day she could go up and see the forests, the towns and the ships that pass by.

The English is our translation of these lines; the book has its own English passage on the same page.

Reading it together

  1. Read the story in English first, so the ending does not catch your child by surprise.
  2. Read it again in Persian, pointing to words like ماه (mâh, moon) and دریا (daryâ, sea).
  3. Talk about how this ending is different from the movie, and which one your child prefers.
  4. Practice the letters of ماه and دریا with the free Farsi alphabet lessons.
