The Story of Achilles retells the Greek legend of the warrior from his parents’ wedding to the arrow that struck his heel. Children follow Odysseus’s trick to find him, his quarrel with Agamemnon, the loss of his friend Patroclus, the armor made by Hephaestus and his duel with Hector, with each passage in English and Persian. 104-page PDF by Reza Nazari.
Achilles is a story about pride, friendship and grief, and The Story of Achilles does not avoid any of them. It begins with his sea-goddess mother and the mortal king Peleus, then shows her hiding the boy in a friendly king’s palace, dressed as a girl, to keep him out of the Trojan War. Odysseus finds him with trays of jewels, fine cloth and swords.
Most of the book follows the war: Agamemnon takes Briseis, Achilles refuses to fight, and the gods take sides. When Patroclus goes into battle in his friend’s armor and is killed by Hector, Achilles returns. The last chapters tell of the duel with Hector, a dream in which Patroclus asks to be buried, and Paris’s arrow.
The story is told in order, with chapter headings such as “Achilles Returns to Battle”.
His parents’ wedding, attended by gods and goddesses, and his mother’s efforts to protect him, including the disguise at a king’s palace.
His mother lays out two paths, lasting fame and a short life or a long, quiet one. He goes to war, then stops fighting when Agamemnon takes Briseis.
Poseidon, Hera and Athena help the Greeks, Aphrodite, Artemis and Apollo help the Trojans, and Zeus decides to support Achilles.
Death is part of this story: Patroclus and Hector are killed, and Achilles mistreats Hector’s body until his mother asks him to stop. It suits children who can talk about that.
About 9 to 13. The story includes deaths in battle and Achilles’ anger, so it fits older children better than a fairy tale does.
It draws on the Iliad and on later Greek legends. The disguise at the king’s palace and the arrow in the heel come from those later tellings, not from Homer.
No. The English tells the whole story; the Persian lets you read the same passage aloud or practice it together.
