The Story of Julius Caesar

The Story of Julius Caesar follows the Roman leader from his birth in Subura, a district of Rome, into an old family that had little money or power. Children read how the powerful Sulla took away his post as a priest and forced him into hiding, how he won a civic crown for bravery at the siege of Mytilene and how he came back to Rome after Sulla died. How the young Caesar survived danger and earned respect in ancient Rome

Most children hear of Julius Caesar as a ruler. The Story of Julius Caesar spends its first pages on how he got there: a family that traced itself back to the goddess Venus but had little money, a teacher named Marcus Antonius Gnipho who taught him to speak well, and the death of his father when Caesar was about sixteen.

Then the story turns tense. Sulla strips Caesar of his post as priest of Jupiter and of the dowry his wife Cornelia brought, and Caesar changes hiding places almost every night until the Vestal Virgins ask for his pardon. The text is detailed, with many Roman names, and each passage appears in English and in Persian.

What the book covers

Family and childhood

Born in Subura on July 13, or perhaps July 12, as the book notes, to Gaius Julius Caesar and Aurelia Cotta, with Gaius Marius as his uncle by marriage.

In hiding

Why Sulla turned against him, how he moved from place to place to stay safe, and who spoke up for him.

First victories

Army service in Asia under Marcus Minucius Thermus, a civic crown for saving a life at Mytilene, and fighting pirates in Cilicia.

Good for

Children who already know a few myths, since the book links Caesar’s family to Aeneas, Troy and Venus, and to Octavian, Rome’s first emperor.

Reading it together

  1. Draw a family tree as you read; the book names his parents, aunt, sisters and his great-nephew Octavian.
  2. Read each page in English first so the Roman names feel familiar, then listen to it in Persian.
  3. Ask why Caesar stayed out of Lepidus’s rebellion, and what that choice says about him.
  4. Learn Persian family words, father, mother, sister, uncle, with the free Persian vocabulary lessons and label your family tree with them.
