Ghazal 172 of Hafez (7 couplets), in the original Persian as on Ganjoor, with a transliteration, a plain English translation, the meanings of key words and the traditional fâl-e Hâfez reading.
Read it word by wordTake your own fâl
What this fâl tells you
You are standing before something larger than you can explain, and that is not a failure. Tradition reads this fal as advice to stay with the question instead of rushing to an answer: amazement itself is a kind of growth, like a sapling. Listen from every side before you decide.
A traditional-style reading for reflection and enjoyment.
How this ghazal is built
radif: heyrat âmad ("wonder came"). qâfiye: -âl (kamâl, hâl, khâl, khiyâl, so'âl, jalâl). A short-metre ghazal; heyrat is the Sufi stage of bewildered wonder.
