FAQ
What is the Persian calendar?
The Persian calendar (Solar Hijri, also called Shamsi or Jalali) is the official calendar of Iran and is also used in Afghanistan. It is a solar calendar: the year starts at Nowruz, the March equinox, and years are counted from the Hijra in 622 CE.
How many days are in each Persian month?
The first six months (Farvardin to Shahrivar) have 31 days, the next five (Mehr to Bahman) have 30 days, and Esfand has 29 days, or 30 in a leap year.
When does the Persian year start?
The year starts on 1 Farvardin, Nowruz, which falls on 20 or 21 March in the Gregorian calendar. For example, 1 Farvardin 1403 was 20 March 2024, and 1 Farvardin 1405 was 21 March 2026.
How can I convert a year quickly in my head?
From Nowruz to 31 December, add 621 to the Persian year to get the Gregorian year; from 1 January to the day before Nowruz, add 622. For example, Yalda night, 30 Azar 1404, fell on 21 December 2025.
Which day starts the Persian week?
The Persian week starts on Saturday (شنبه, shanbe) and ends on Friday (جمعه, jom’e), which is the weekly day off in Iran.
