How Persian numbers work

Persian numbers follow a regular pattern. Learn 1 to 19, the tens and the hundreds, and you can build any number by joining the parts with و (-o, “and”). Large numbers are grouped in thousands: هزار (hezâr, thousand), میلیون (milyun, million) and میلیارد (milyârd, billion).

FAQ

How do you write the Persian digits?

The Persian digits are ۰ ۱ ۲ ۳ ۴ ۵ ۶ ۷ ۸ ۹ (0 to 9). Even though Persian text runs right to left, numbers are written left to right, so 1404 is ۱۴۰۴.

Is 1000 هزار or یک هزار?

In everyday Persian, 1000 is simply هزار (hezâr), so 1,250 is هزار و دویست و پنجاه (hezâr-o devist-o panjâh). یک هزار (yek hezâr) is also correct but is less common in speech. For a million and a billion, یک is normally kept: یک میلیون (yek milyun).

How is "and" used in Persian numbers?

Parts of a number are joined with و ("and"), pronounced -o after the previous word: 21 is بیست و یک (bist-o yek) and 345 is سیصد و چهل و پنج (sisad-o chehel-o panj).

How do you make ordinal numbers in Persian?

Add -om (ـم) to the number: پنجم (panjom, fifth). Two and three change to دوم (dovvom) and سوم (sevvom), and 30 becomes سی‌ام (si-yom). "First" is usually اول (avval) or یکم (yekom). Before a noun, add -in: دومین بار (dovvomin bâr, the second time).

Are Persian digits the same as Arabic digits?

Most are the same, but four, five and six look different. Persian uses ۴ ۵ ۶, while Arabic uses ٤ ٥ ٦. This converter reads both and always writes the Persian forms.
