Persian Verb Drill: Conjugation Practice Game

Learner practicing Persian verbs with a colorful conjugation wheel.

Practise Persian verb conjugation as a game: you get a pronoun, a verb and a tense (for example ما – رفتن – simple past) and type or pick the right form (رفتیم, raftim). Every answer is checked against the same engine as our Persian verb conjugator, with an explanation when you get it wrong.

How to use the verb drill

Pick a mode, then the tenses, persons and verbs you want. Practice is untimed and brings back each missed form a few questions later until you get it right. 60-second Sprint counts how many correct forms you produce in a minute and keeps your best score. Stem master trains the step most learners skip: from the infinitive, give the present stem (رفتن → رو). Review missed replays every form you got wrong in earlier sessions; a form leaves the list once you answer it correctly.

Start with multiple choice, then switch to typing. In Persian typing mode you can tap the on-screen keys, type on a normal QWERTY keyboard (each key becomes the Persian letter of the standard layout) or use your own Persian keyboard. Finglish mode accepts common spellings, so miravam, mirawam and mi-ravam all count. Checking is forgiving about things that are not grammar: a space or no space instead of the half-space in می‌روم, or Arabic ي and ك instead of Persian ی and ک. You still get a spelling tip.

When an answer is wrong, the drill says why: a real form in the wrong person or tense, a missing می‌, the past stem where the present stem belongs, or a wrong ending. It then shows the correct form with its transliteration and the formula. Your accuracy per verb, best streak and Sprint records are saved in your browser.

Persian tense formulas

Every Persian verb has two stems. The past stem is the infinitive without ن (رفتن → رفت). The present stem often has to be learned (رو). Each tense is one of these stems plus a prefix and a personal ending:

TenseFormulaمن + رفتنNegative
Simple present مضارع اخباریI go / I am goingمی‌ + present stem + endingمی‌رومmiravamنمی‌رومnemiravam
Simple past ماضی سادهI wentpast stem + endingرفتمraftamنرفتمnaraftam

Present perfect ماضی نقلیI have gonepast participle + ‌امرفته‌امrafte-amنرفته‌امnarafte-am
Past perfect ماضی بعیدI had gonepast participle + بودمرفته بودمrafte budamنرفته بودمnarafte budam
Present subjunctive مضارع التزامی(that) I goبـ + present stem + endingبرومberavamنرومnaravam
Future آیندهI will goخواه + ending + past stemخواهم رفتkhâham raftنخواهم رفتnakhâham raft
Imperative امرgo! (to تو)بـ + present stemبروboroنروnaro
Present progressive مضارع مستمرI am going (right now)دار + ending + simple presentدارم می‌رومdâram miravam–
Spoken present (Tehran)I go (in speech)می‌ + short stem + spoken endingمی‌رمmiramنمی‌رمnemiram

Compound verbs such as کار کردن (to work) keep the first word unchanged and conjugate only the verb: کار می‌کنم, کار کردم. Compounds with کردن and شدن usually drop بـ in the subjunctive: کار کنم.

Personal endings

The endings are almost the same in every tense. In the simple past the third person singular has no ending, and in spoken Tehran Persian ـد becomes ـه (-e), ـید becomes ـین (-in) and ـند becomes ـن (-an). Here is خوردن (to eat):

The most common irregular present stems

Verbs ending in یدن are easy: drop یدن and you have the present stem (پرسیدن → پرس). Most other everyday verbs have a present stem you simply have to memorise. These are the ones you will meet first; the Stem master mode drills them.

Common mistakes the drill catches

  • Forgetting می‌ in the simple present and past continuous. Only داشتن (دارم) and بودن (هستم) go without it.
  • Putting the ending on the wrong word in the future: it is خواهم رفت (khâham raft), never “khâh raftam”.
  • Using the past stem in the subjunctive: بروم (beravam), not “beraftam”.
  • Mixing up نـ and نمی‌: the negative of می‌روم is نمی‌روم, while the negative of رفتم is نرفتم.

FAQ

Which tenses can I practise?

Nine written tenses: simple present, simple past, past continuous, present perfect, past perfect, present subjunctive, future, imperative and present progressive, each in the positive and the negative where the form exists. You can also drill the spoken Tehran present (می‌رم, می‌گم) and present stems.

Are the answers reliable?

Yes. The drill uses the same conjugation engine and verb list (201 verbs) as our Persian verb conjugator, including the special cases: داشتن without می‌, بودن with هستم and باشم, آمدن with بیایم, and prefixed verbs such as برگشتن (برمی‌گردم).

Does it accept answers without the half-space?

Yes. می روم and میروم are accepted for می‌روم, and the drill shows the standard spelling with the half-space (ZWNJ). Type it with Shift+Space or the ZWNJ key.

Can I answer in Finglish?

Yes. Choose “Type in Finglish” and write the form in Latin letters, for example raftim or khâham raft. Long â can be typed as a, aa or â, and kh, gh, sh and ch work as usual. Spoken forms are written as they sound, for example miram.

Where is my progress saved?

In your browser’s local storage on this device: per-verb accuracy, missed forms, best streak, day streak and best Sprint scores. Nothing is sent anywhere. Use “Reset progress” to clear it.
