Remarks on Avoiding Improper Attachments (گفتار اندر پرهیز کردن از صحبت احداث) is from Chapter VII, On Training and Instruction (در عالم تربیت) of Saadi’s Bustan (بوستان, “The Orchard”), written in 1257. The Persian verses are given with a rhymed English translation, couplet by couplet.

| A beautiful mistress will ruin your life; Go and make your home thriving by wedding a wife! It’s improper to squander your love on a rose To whom, ev’ry morning, a nightingale goes. | خرابت کند شاهد خانه کن برو خانه آباد گردان به زن نشاید هوس باختن با گلی که هر بامدادش بود بلبلی |
| Since, candle-like, ev’ry assembly she lit, Do not you, like a moth, round her flame further flit! Does the beautiful, affable woman adorned, Resemble the ignorant youth who is scorned? | چو خود را به هر مجلسی شمع کرد تو دیگر چو پروانه گردش مگرد زن خوب خوش خوی آراسته چه ماند به نادان نو خاسته؟ |
| As a rosebud, fidelity breathe in her ear! And rose-like, all smiles, she will fall at your rear. But not so the stripling, wrapped up in his pride, Who resembles hard fruit that a stone can’t divide. | در او دم چو غنچه دمی از وفا که از خنده افتد چو گل در قفا نه چون کودک پیچ بر پیچ شنگ که چون مقل نتوان شکستن به سنگ |
| As a virgin of Paradise, view not his charms! He, too, has an aspect that ghoul-like alarms! If you kiss both his feet, he no care for you shows; If you kiss, too, his dust, he no thankfulness knows. | مبین دل فریبش چو حور بهشت کزان روی دیگر چو غول است زشت گرش پای بوسی نداردت پاس ورش خاک باشی نداند سپاس |
| With your brains and your money you foolishly part, When to any man’s child you surrender your heart. | سر از مغز و دست از درم کن تهی چو خاطر به فرزند مردم دهی |
| On another man’s son, a bad look do not cast! For your own may return to you ruined, at last. | مکن بد به فرزند مردم نگاه که فرزند خویشت برآید تباه |
