A writer who filled 100,000 pages, and the general father who inspired him

Dumas’s story begins with his father. Thomas-Alexandre was born in Saint-Domingue, today Haiti, to a French nobleman and an enslaved woman named Marie-Cessette, came to France at 14 and was a general by 31. The Story of Alexandre Dumas gives that history its own pages before the writer himself takes the stage.

Along the way children meet the newspaper serials that made him famous, a château full of guests that he had to sell after two years, and a friend’s description of him talking on and on like a spinning windmill. The book is honest that he spent freely and often ran short of money, and it follows him into exile in Brussels in 1851 and back to Paris in 1864.

Sample lines

Three lines about his family and his early years, as printed in the book:

Persian English
Their mommy’s name was Marie-Louise, and she helped her family at an inn where travelers would stay.
Thomas-Alexandre was the only boy in his family and when he was just 14 years old, his daddy took him all the way to France.
In 1830, when Dumas was a grown-up, there was a big change in France.
