The Story of Jules Verne

The Story of Jules Verne tells how a boy born on an island in the Loire grew up to invent what he called the novel of science. Children read about his teacher’s tales of a husband lost at sea, the law career his father wanted for him, his friendship with Alexandre Dumas fils, and his meeting with the publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel in 1862. English and Persian. 47-page PDF by Reza Nazari.

How a boy who loved sea stories came to write Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas

Jules Verne’s mother came from a family of sailors and shipowners, and his first teacher, Madame Sambin, told the class that her missing husband would come home one day like Robinson Crusoe. The Story of Jules Verne shows how those stories stayed with him while his father pushed him to study law in Paris.

Jules went to literary salons instead, wrote plays, worked for almost no pay as a theater secretary, and researched geography for the magazine The Family Museum. The book follows his first trips abroad, to Britain in 1858 and Stockholm in 1861, his marriage to Honorine, and the books that came after he met Hetzel.

What the book covers

It covers his life from 8 February 1828 to his death in Amiens on 24 March 1905.

Growing up

A brother, Paul, three sisters, a Catholic school where he was good at memorizing poems, geography, Greek, Latin and singing, and a baccalauréat graded Good Enough.

Becoming a writer

Reciting Notre-Dame de Paris by heart, a play revised with Dumas fils, letters telling his father he had to follow his passion, and the idea of mixing real science with adventure.

What children learn

That research can be exciting. Verne loved digging up facts in the library and turned them into stories.

How the Persian is written

Unvowelled standard Persian; names and book titles are set in Persian quotation marks, such as «ژول ورن» (Jules Verne).

From his school days

Three sentences from the opening chapters, each with Verne’s story told in the book’s English:

Persian English
نام پدرش «پیر» و نام مادرش «سوفی» بود. His daddy’s name was Pierre, and his mommy’s name was Sophie.
معلم او، مادام سامبین، بیوه‌ی یک کاپیتان نیروی دریایی بود که مدت‌ها پیش ناپدید شده بود. His teacher, Madame Sambin, was the widow of a naval captain who had gone missing a long time ago.
اما پدر ژول می‌خواست که او وکیل شود؛ بنابراین او را برای تحصیل در رشته‌ی حقوق به پاریس فرستاد. But Jules’ father wanted him to become a lawyer, so he sent him to Paris to study law.

Reading it together

  1. Ask your child which Verne story they would most like to live inside: under the sea, in a balloon or at the center of the Earth.
  2. Read the English, then the Persian, and look for the book titles in quotation marks.
  3. After the library pages, pick one real fact together and turn it into a two-line adventure.
  4. Check the new words with an older child using the free Persian vocabulary quiz.
