The poet who spoke up for the poor and refused to stay quiet

Victor Hugo was the youngest of three boys, and his father’s army career kept the family moving. The Story of Victor Marie Hugo follows him to school in Madrid, a boarding school in Paris and a magazine he started with his brothers in 1819. His first book of poems came out when he was 20 and earned him a royal pension from King Louis XVIII.

The second half moves from books to public life. In 1849 Hugo asked the National Assembly to end poverty, give all people the vote and let every child go to school for free. When Napoleon III took power, he left France and lived at Hauteville House on Guernsey until 1870. The book also explains how his plays inspired more than one hundred operas.

What the book covers

The book runs from 26 February 1802 to his death in Paris on 22 May 1885.

His books

Hans of Iceland, Odes et Ballades, Notre-Dame de Paris in 1831, which led Paris to repair its old cathedral, and Les Misérables in 1862, with its hero Jean Valjean.

His fight for fairness

Speeches against poverty, his stand against Napoleon III, and moves from Brussels to Jersey to Guernsey.

What children learn

That writing can change things: a novel helped save a cathedral, and a speech asked for free school for every child.

How the Persian is written

Persian written the normal way, without vowel marks. Book titles use their usual Persian names, such as بینوایان (Binavâyân, Les Misérables).

From his early life

Three lines from the book, with its own English:

Persian English
ویکتور و برادرانش در مادرید به مدرسه رفتند، اما مادرشان، سوفی، به‌تنهایی به پاریس بازگشت و به صورت رسمی از پدر ویکتور جدا شد. Victor and his brothers went to school in Madrid, but their mommy, Sophie, went back to Paris by herself, and she and Victor’s daddy officially separated.
استعداد ویکتور هوگو در نویسندگی از همان جوانی مشخص بود. Victor Hugo’s talent for writing showed up when he was very young.
شعرهای او سرشار از انرژی و شور بود. His poems were full of energy and passion.
