From a Corsican childhood to Waterloo, told simply for young readers

Napoleon is a name children meet in history lessons, often with no idea who he was. The Story of Napoleon Bonaparte starts with the boy: the second child of Carlo, a lawyer, and Letizia, growing up in Ajaccio, playing explorer in the fields and reading about great leaders. At nine he leaves for the Royal Military Academy of Brienne in France.

The later chapters explain, in very simple terms, why his code of laws mattered: it was meant to treat everyone the same. Then come the victory at Austerlitz, the loss of his throne in 1814, the return from Elba, Waterloo in 1815 and his death on Saint Helena in 1821. Both English and Persian are given for every passage.

What the book covers

Four short chapters: childhood, education, achievements and the end of his life.

The story

Corsica and Ajaccio, military school, the Napoleonic Code, his armies crossing deserts and mountains, Austerlitz, Elba, Waterloo and Saint Helena.

What children learn

That fair rules help people live together, and that even a famous leader has ups and downs. The book does not hide that his story ended in defeat.

How the Persian is written

Modern Persian without vowel marks, with place names in their usual Persian forms such as کورسیکا (Corsica) and آژاکسیو (Ajaccio).

Good for

Children starting European history, and families who want a short nonfiction read in Persian.

Sample lines

Three sentences from the childhood chapter, with the book’s English:

Persian English
پدر ناپلئون بناپارت، کارلو، وکیل بود و مادرش، لتیزیا، خانه‌دار بود. Napoleon Bonaparte’s dad, Carlo, was a lawyer, and his mom, Letizia, took care of the home.
در کورسیکا هوا پر از عطر گل‌های وحشی بود و صدای دریا مثل لالایی ملایمی بود. In Corsica, the air was filled with the scent of wildflowers, and the sound of the sea was like a gentle lullaby.
ناپلئون عاشق بازی در مزارع بود و وانمود می‌کرد که یک کاشف بزرگ یا یک شوالیه‌ی شجاع است. Napoleon loved playing in the fields, pretending to be a great explorer or a brave knight.

Reading it together

  1. Find Corsica, France, Elba and Saint Helena on a map before you start; the story moves between all four.
  2. Read a passage in English, then the same passage in Persian, and ask your child to spot the names and dates in the Persian text.
  3. After the chapter on the Napoleonic Code, make three fair rules for your own home together.
  4. Practice the numbers in the dates, 1769, 1805, 1815, with the free Persian numbers lesson.

  • want a short biography that can be read in two or three sittings
  • are looking for nonfiction in Persian for a school-age child

Common questions

Gently. Battles are described as big games of strategy, with no fighting scenes, and Waterloo is told as the end of his adventures.

Does my child need to read Persian already?

No. Read the Persian aloud while your child follows the English.
