What happens when a king forgets his duty: a Shahnameh story of war and loyalty

Most children’s Shahnameh books stop with the famous heroes. Nozar’s Kingdom tells a part that is less often retold: the reign of Nozar, son of Manouchehr. It opens with a deathbed scene in which Manouchehr calls being king “very hard and often sad” and hands his son the kingdom along with a warning. Nozar does not listen well, and the elders of Iran turn to Sam in Mazandaran.

The middle of the book is a long war with Turan. General Qaran, son of Kaveh the Blacksmith, faces Afrasiab, Garsivaz and Piran Veesa’s son Barman, and the old warrior Qobad steps forward when younger men hold back. The last chapter, “Clash in Zabulestan”, follows Zal, mourning his father Sam, as he rides to help Mehrab of Kabul.
