On the Responsibility of Rulers (در نواخت رعیت و رحمت بر افتادگان) is from Chapter I, On Justice, Wisdom and Government (در عدل و تدبیر و رای) of Saadi’s Bustan (بوستان, “The Orchard”), written in 1257. The Persian verses are given with a rhymed English translation, couplet by couplet.

| Take care, lest you carelessly slumber! for sleep Is forbid to the chief, with the tribe in his keep. | الا تا بغفلت نخفتی که نوم حرام است بر چشم سالار قوم |
| Take care, that the grief of your subjects you share! And fear, lest the vengeance of Time you should bear! | غم زیردستان بخور زینهار بترس از زبردستی روزگار |
| Advice that, devoid of self-int’rest, one sees, Is like drugs that are bitter, repelling disease. | نصیحت که خالی بود از غرض چو داروی تلخ است، دفع مرض |
