On the Transitoriness of the World گفتار اندر بی‌وفائی دنیا
On the Transitoriness of the World (گفتار اندر بی‌وفائی دنیا) is from Chapter I, On Justice, Wisdom and Government (در عدل و تدبیر و رای) of Saadi’s Bustan (بوستان, “The Orchard”), written in 1257. The Persian verses are given with a rhymed English translation, couplet by couplet.
Bustan Saadi بوستان سعدی
| The world is a realm that is transient, oh son! Do not hope for fidelity here, for there’s none! | جهان ای پسر ملک جاوید نیست ز دنیا وفاداری امید نیست |
| Did not Solomon’s throne, on the wind swiftly fly, Both morning and ev’ning (on him safety lie!), | نه بر باد رفتی سحرگاه و شام سریر سلیمان علیه‌السلام؟ |
| And have you not seen that it vanished at last? Happy he, who with knowledge and justice has passed | به آخر ندیدی که بر باد رفت؟ خنک آن که با دانش و داد رفت |
| From the centre, the man bore Prosperity’s ball, Who laboured to comfort the great and the small. | کسی زین میان گوی دولت ربود که در بند آسایش خلق بود |
| The people were useful who held the fruit fast Not those who collected and left it, at last. | بکار آمد آنها که برداشتند نه گرد آوریدند و بگذاشتند |
