Remarks on generosity گفتار اندر ثمره جوانمردی
Remarks on Generosity (گفتار اندر ثمره جوانمردی) is from Chapter II, On Beneficence (در احسان) of Saadi’s Bustan (بوستان, “The Orchard”), written in 1257. The Persian verses are given with a rhymed English translation, couplet by couplet.
Bustan Saadi بوستان سعدی
| Show kindness, oh son! since all human in name, By kindness can evry wild animal tame’! Round your enemy’s neck, fasten favours profuse — With the sabre, he cannot divide such a noose. | ببخش ای پسر کآدمی زاده صید به احسان توان کرد و، وحشی به قید عدو را به الطاف گردن ببند که نتوان بریدن به تیغ این کمند |
| When a foe” sees abundance and favour and grace, Not again will his wickedness dare to show face. Do not sin, though a comrade should wickedness show! Good fruit from a seed that is bad will not grow. | چو دشمن کرم بیند و لطف و جود نیاید دگر خبث از او در وجود مکن بد که بد بینی از یار نیک نیاید ز تخم بدی بار نیک |
| When you deal with a friend in a miserly way, He desires not to witness you prosp’rous and gay. If a ruler, to foes, a kind manner extends, In a very short time, all the foes become friends. | چو با دوست دشخوار گیری و تنگ نخواهد که بیند تو را نقش و رنگ وگر خواجه با دشمنان نیکخوست بسی بر نیاید که گردند دوست |
