Story of the wretched man and the ass حکایت مسکین
Story of the Wretched Man and the Ass (حکایت مسکین) is from Chapter VIII, On Thanks (در شکر بر عافیت) of Saadi’s Bustan (بوستان, “The Orchard”), written in 1257. The Persian verses are given with a rhymed English translation, couplet by couplet.
Bustan Saadi بوستان سعدی
| A man left behind on the road, weeping, cried: “Who more wretched than I in this plain can be spied”? | ز ره باز پس ماندهای میگریست که مسکین تر از من در این دشت کیست؟ |
| “Oh void of discretion” a burdened ass spoke, “How long will you Heaven’s oppression provoke? | جهاندیدهای گفتش ای هوشیار اگر مردی این یک سخن گوش دار |
| Go tender your thanks, since you ride not a beast, That you are not an ass under people, at least”! | برو شکر کن چون به خر برنهای که آخر بنی آدمی، خر نهای |
