Story of the holy man and the youth حکایت پارسا و کودک
Story of the Holy Man and the Youth (حکایت پارسا و کودک) is from Chapter VII, On Training and Instruction (در عالم تربیت) of Saadi’s Bustan (بوستان, “The Orchard”), written in 1257. The Persian verses are given with a rhymed English translation, couplet by couplet.

| I have heard that among the religious, one had In pleasantry joked with a good-looking lad | شنیدم که از پارسایان یکی به طیبت بخندید با کودکی |
| The other good men, who in solitude dwell, Discussed in his absence his shortcomings well. | دگر پارسایان خلوت نشین به عیبش فتادند در پوستین |
| This story at length with rapidity spread; To the man who was pious they told it; he said: | به آخر نماند این حکایت نهفت به صاحب نظر بازگفتند و گفت |
| Do not rend a friend’s cover, love-stricken in plight; Good humour’s not wrong, nor is backbiting right! ” | مدر پرده بر یار شوریده حال نه طیبت حرام است و غیبت حلال! |
