Story ON BACKBITING AND ROBBERY حکایت غیبت و دزدی
Story on Backbiting and Robbery (حکایت غیبت و دزدی) is from Chapter VII, On Training and Instruction (در عالم تربیت) of Saadi’s Bustan (بوستان, “The Orchard”), written in 1257. The Persian verses are given with a rhymed English translation, couplet by couplet.
Bustan Saadi بوستان سعدی
| A person remarked, and I thought it was good, That better than backbiting, robbery stood. | کسی گفت و پنداشتم طیبت است که دزدی بسامان تر از غیبت است |
| I replied, “Oh companion, with intellect crazed! At hearing you talk, I am greatly amazed! | بدو گفتم ای یار آشفته هوش شگفت آمد این داستانم به گوش |
| What good do you see in a criminal case, That you higher than backbiting give it a place? “ | به ناراستی در چه بینی بهی که بر غیبتش مرتبت مینهی؟ |
| “Very well!” he replied, “thieves show rashness, enough; By the strength of their manhood their stomachs they stuff. | بلی گفت دزدان تهور کنند به بازوی مردی شکم پر کنند |
| But not. so, the backbiting, meritless wight; Who blackened his book and secured no delight! “ | ز غیبت چه میخواهد آن ساده مرد که دیوان سیه کرد و چیزی نخورد! |
